Dry Eye Consultation & Treatment

Eyes that are too watery or extremely dry with burning, itching, or sandy sensations are common symptoms of dry eye.

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a common and chronic eye condition that’s caused by the eyes not having enough quality tears to keep them moist. Tears are essential for maintaining clear vision and overall eye health and without sufficient tears, you may experience discomfort, irritation, and blurred vision.

How Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) Causes Dry Eye

The most common cause of having dry eyes is meibomian gland dysfunction, which happens when the tiny glands in your eyelids that produce oil become blocked or dysfunctional. This oil is crucial for lubricating the eyes and preventing tears from evaporating too quickly. When the glands don't work properly, the tears evaporate faster, leading to dry and irritated eyes. Sometimes the tears become too watery to try and compensate for the dryness, however these tears don’t have the correct balance of oil to water to hydrate the eyes.

Common Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye symptoms can vary but often include:

  • Dryness
  • Grittiness or sandiness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Excessive tearing
  • Blurry vision

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed and Treated?

Diagnosing dry eye involves booking a dry eye consultation with an eye doctor so they can assess your symptoms, conduct tests to measure tear quality and production, and create a tailored treatment plan.

Some tests include measuring the amount of tears that are on the surface of your eye, how quickly your tears evaporate, and if you have inflammatory markers that indicate the severity and the chronic nature of your dry eye.

One of our skilled dry eye doctors may recommend artificial tears, prescription eye drops, lifestyle changes, warm compresses, punctal plugs, or advanced treatments such as intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

What Can I Expect in Terms of Results & Dry Eye Relief After Treatment?

Dry eye can be quite complex, and results vary depending on the patient and the severity of their dry eye.

In-office dry eye treatments are targeted to help our patients get a boost so at-home therapies become more effective at providing relief for dry eye.

What are some common symptoms that may prompt a patient to need treatment?

Patients with Dry Eye disease will most commonly complain of burning, grittiness, and excessive blinking to help clear their vision up. As counterintuitive as it may seem patients may even experience excessive watering or tearing as a sign of their dry eye.

This is often a tear quality dry eye rather than a tear quantity issue relating to dry eye. It is possible that as providers we may see signs of dryness, before you start experiencing symptoms. In cases like that we may start you on a regimen to prevent symptoms from occurring.

How do your treatments differ from those offered by an optometrist or other eye care provider?

Our treatments differ are individualized per person. Not only that, but some eye care providers are not as comfortable with performing these treatments. We are a group of highly trained and skilled providers, who are up to date on the latest treatments for your dry eye needs.
